How To Start A Website On Bluehost – Simple Quick Start Guide

So you want to start a website? You’re not the only one.

Whatever your reason is for starting a blog or website, blogs can be financially lucrative, and therefore, competition is high.

To back the above statement up, you can see some of the eyewatering sums made every month in this Forbes article.

Pretty amazing!

I’m sure you still want to build a website after reading that!

In this blog post, I am going to set out an easy to follow guide on how to start a website on Bluehost. I use Bluehost web hosting here on Blue Sky Funnel.

Bluehost is cheap if you are just getting started and want to build a website. Bluehost has good customer support and has a one-click WordPress installation feature. WordPress is what you build your site in and upload your site content (more on how to install WordPress later).

With Bluehost and a WordPress website, you can build any website you want thanks to the many free templates and themes available for WordPress (fitness, food, business, reviews).

With a Bluehost account, you will also get a free domain name and SSL certificate for your site!

Ok, let’s get into it.

Bluehost – Quickstart Guide

Step 1 – Website Hosting With A Free Domain.

First, we need to get our website hosting set up. This is a service that stores all the files (WordPress, your posts and images, SSL and domain, etc) so they can be accessed online 24/7. This is where Bluehost comes in.

For this guide, we are using Bluehost as they offer…

  • Free Domain Name
  • Free SSL Certificate
  • 1-Click WordPress Install
  • 24/7 Support

If all that wasn’t enough, you can also get 50% off Bluehost from our link here.

  1. Go to the Bluehost website
  2. Click the green ‘Get Started’ button on the Bluehost homepage.
  3. On the Bluehost pricing plan page choose the cheapest plan $3.95 option (or whatever you prefer)
  4. Pick your website domain name (this what shows up in search engines – for example)
  5. Enter your details (name, email, etc) and make sure to complete the Bluehost sign-up process.

Bluehost will send you a message to the email address that you used to sign up when you finish this process. Remember to confirm your email address after you finish signing up.

Website Hosting (Bluehost) which includes your domain name, is the only thing in this guide that you will need to pay for. There is no way around this if you are serious about your site.

Everything else including the WordPress site, the SSL certificate, and the website themes are all free.

Step 2- Install WordPress

Now we have sorted out our hosting and website domain name from Bluehost, we need to install WordPress. Then we can start building our new site.

  1. Login to your Bluehost account
  2. Bluehost will offer you the option of creating your website right away. Follow the simple steps and install WordPress.
  3. Bluehost will start the WordPress install for you.
  4. You can refer to the official Bluehost process here if you get stuck when you install WordPress on your Bluehost website.

Step 3 – Log Into Your Bluehost Account

Your install of WordPress on your website should now be complete. Next, go to the ‘My Sites Tab’ in Bluehost.

  1. Click on the ‘My Sites’ tab in the Bluehost left side menu.
  2. Click on the ‘Log-in’ button next to the ‘Manage Site’ button

Top Tip! – You can also log in by adding /wp-login.php to the end of your domain name website URL.

For example –

Make sure you bookmark this page, you won’t have to log in to Bluehost every time you want to access the WordPress dash.

When you are in your WordPress dashboard, you will see a banner saying ‘Coming soon active’. This just means you haven’t launched your website yet (won’t show up in search engines).

When you are ready, simply click the ‘Launch your site’ button and your website will be live! (You may want to do this now though so you can see changes that are made to your website, in real-time).

Step 4 – Install A WordPress Theme

There are so many WordPress themes available to you, both free and premium.

My advice would be to choose something simple to start. Maybe the free Twenty Twenty theme or similar.

From the WordPress left side menu…

  1. Select ‘Appearance’
  2. Select ‘Themes’
  3. Click ‘Add New’
  4. Select a theme you like and click ‘Install’ and then ‘Activate’

You can try a few out and remember you can always change the theme later or buy a premium one.

Step 5 – Amend Your Site Details

To edit your website details

  1. Click on ‘Settings’ from the left side menu
  2. Click on ‘General’
  3. Add a website Title
  4. Add a site Tagline

This gives your website a name and tagline other than your domain name URL.

Top Tip! – In the ‘Permalink’ settings you may also want to select ‘Post name’ here. for a good URL structure.

Step 6 – Set Up A Homepage Menu

Your main WordPress website navigation menu will likely contain a bunch of links to pages like your blog, contact, newsletter, and home pages.

To set up a primary menu will depend on the theme you selected. However, the principles remain the same.

Starting at the left side menu

  1. Click on ‘Appearance’ then click on ‘Menus’
  2. Select which items you want on the menu. This can be changed anytime so don’t worry too much.
  3. Click on ‘Add to Menu’ to add each page you want. (You may not have made many yet! When you make a home, contact, blog website pages you can add them here.)
  4. On the bottom of the page, select the ‘Primary Menu’ box.
  5. Click on ‘Save Menu’

Your menu should now be showing on your website home page. If not, make sure you go back through the steps above.

Congrats! You have pretty much set up your Bluehost account and finished installing WordPress well done!
